Briggs & Stratton 450 lawn mower
We have a Briggs & Stratton 450 Series - 148cc lawn mower, aka. push mower (not a 450E, but a 450).
Identification
There are models, types en codes en the site seems to use these entities interchangeably. More relevant: At the first try I got no results. Finally it worked out:
- Model: 9T502
- Type: 2240 B1 (I?)
- Code: 091013(8?)51
- Model-Type: It should be 10 digits. Insert a 0 at the beginning othersie → 09T502-2240

Maintenances schedule
Every 8 hours or daily
- Check oil level
- Clean area around muffler & controls
Every 25 hours or annually
- Clean air filter
Every 50 hours or annually
- Change engine oil
- Check muffler and spark arrester → At this specific model, there is nothing to do here
Annually
- Replace air filter
- Replace spark plug
- Clean air cooling system
Oil
Check oil level
It wasn't very clear to me how this works. Now it is:
- Place mower on a rather even surface
- Does the mower has to been out of operation for e.g., at least half an hour? I don't know. I doubt if it matters much
- Clean the dipstick
- Insert dipstick & screw tight the cap
- Take out dipstick
- Read-out oil level: This is the level of oil at the surface of the dipstick. It doesn't matter if there is some oil on the side of the dipstick. Actually, there was (2022.06) a bit of oil on the site of the dipstick all the way until the top. Besides, the oil isn't always a black substance. It often just looks like the dipstick is wet as from water - And this is a clear line!
What oil?
I will operate the mower in the range of 10-35 degrees Celsius. Best oils:
- SAE 30
- 5W-30 synthetic oil.
10W-30 oil is also useable, but will be consumed accesively about 27 degrees.
Detach blade
- Avoid leaking oil - But how?
- Remove the spark plug, so there is no change it will start by itself
- You should turn the bolt counterclockwise to remove - The usual direction
- Fix the blade in place using e.g., a log of wood, a pair of pliers (e.g. [1]) or more practical: Wood clamps!

Casus: Rook in de uitlaatgassen (juli 2021)
Op een gegeven moment werkte-ie niet meer. De volgende dag weer wel, maar de uitlaatgassen bevatten veel rook. Wat is er aan de hand?
Handelingen:
- Oliepeil gecontroleerd: Nix aan de hand
- Eigenaars om raad gevraagd: Negeren was het antwoord
- Gewoon verder maaien. Na een paar minuten verdween de blauwe rook.
Vermoedelijke oorzaak: Ik had 'm tegen de muur gekanteld, omdat het mes van z'n as was gevallen (losse moer). Daardoor is er olie in de benzine gekomen (dit ding is écht viertakt!). Carburatoren werken dankzij zwaartekracht. Op het moment dat je een carburator omdraait, raakt-ie in de war. (Dat was trouwens een groot probleem met Spitfires in de Tweede Wereldoorlog: Als je een salto maakte, begon de motor te sputteren).
En als laatste: blauwe rook geeft aan dat er olie in de benzine zit. Dat is geen probleem (behalve voor het milieu en het eventuele oliepeil).
