Buttons of a 60-button accordion

Juhu! I got a 60-key piano-type accordion!

Fingering

[1]:

This is about the left hand:

  • Finger 1: Thumb
  • Finger 2: Pointer finger
  • Finger 3: Middle finger
  • Finger 4: Ring finger
  • Finger 5: Pinky.

Even the pinky is sometimes used in playing [2]

It's probably best to start with the 4/3 method, and later also learn the 3/2 method, if needed.

3/2 method

The 3/2 method:

  • Use your middle finger for the bass rows
  • Use your pointer finger for the chord rows.

Pro:

  • It's intuitive, and self-taught accordionists usuall adopt this system
  • It goes well together with using the pinky for large spreads, in some advanced pieces

Con:

  • You would have to use your middle finger for both the bass button and the alternating bass button, and that's limiting: Slow and error-prone

4/3 method

The 4/3 method [3]:

  • Ringer finger (4) on the bass
  • Middle finger (3) on the chords
  • Pointer finger (2) on the alternate bass.

Pro:

  • More comfortable for your wrist - The angle is more natural
  • Faster and more control.

Con:

  • Initially harder to learn.
