Grammatical relations - Overview

A probably never-complete overview of grammatical functions or grammatical relations

(1) Nominative

the nominative is the core of the sentence:

• It's counted as case #1 within the 8 cases of Indo-European
• Sentences can't exist without nominative part
• All other functions are connected to this. This is why grammatical relation might be quite an apt name
• In some Polish sentences (I forgot examples), the nominal part seems to be absent. However, it seems to be absorbed by the persoonsvorm - Quite unsettling, though

(2) Genitive

The genitive denotes something concerning property, ownership or a similar relation

The genitive can relate 2 functions to the core of a sentence (without the sentence being one of these tw): An owner and a property. E.g.: I see a man with his dog: Only 7 words, but already 3 grammatical functions

Adessive

The adessive can be seen as an expansion of the locative.

• In Hungarian, this is implemented as a grammatical case with suffixes -nál/-nél

Allative

The allative function denotes movement towards the vicinity of. It can be seen as an expansion of the locative function.

• In Hungarian, this is indicated through the suffixes -hoz/-hez/-höz. E.g.: Megyünk tengerhez - We go to the see

Essive-formal

Essief-formaal (-ként)

Essief-formaal is een naamval die essief en formaal combineert. It can express the position, task, state (e.g. "as a tourist"), or the manner (e.g. "like a hunted animal"). Er is twijfel over of dit wel als een naamval moet worden gezien:

• Geen vocaalharmonisatie
• Naamvals-suffixen zijn altijd de laatste suffixen aan een woord, maar dat is hier niet het geval, omdat de suffix '-i' toegevoegd kan worden.

Essive-modal

De essief-modale naamval geeft aan:

• Toestand of capaciteit waarin iets of iemand verkeert
• Toestand of capaciteit die iets iemand heeft
• De manier waarop iets wordt uitgevoerd
• De manier waarop een gebeurtenis plaatsvindt
• De taal die iemand spreekt.

Suffix: -ul/-ül.

Voorbeelden - Om van een bijvoeglijk naamwoord een bijwoord te maken:

• Rossz (bad) → Rosszul (badly)
• Angol (Engels) → Angolul (in Engels).
